"I had nothing to say I was going through a time in my life where I didn't really want to share what was going on, but I didn't want to be boring."
He described those comments as him free associating garbage, adding he "wasnt prepared to be honest.
Mayer also described himself as a control freak, who in the past believed he could correct his way out of any situation, including winning over people who disliked his music.
You will eventually learn that you cannot correct your way out of everything, he said. I was thinking, 'if they dont like me, there must be something they are missing.'

The interview comes as Mayer is contemplating undergoing surgery to correct a nodule near his vocal cords. He has had this surgery before, but the problem has come back. Mayer said recovery from the surgery involves not speaking for the first month, and a strict diet for another five months.
Basically if you made a list of all the things you enjoy eating or drinking, you can't do those things. Doctors have said, 'You just live like a monk.' "
Mayers new album, Born and Raised, is set for a May 22 release.
