Joe Simpson, Jessica Simpson's dad, pleads no contest to DUI, gets probation

Joe Simpson, the father and manager of Ashlee and Jessica Simpson, has pleaded no contest to one count of DUI and was sentenced to 36 months of probation.

The punishment was handed down at a Los Angeles court on Friday, November 16. He did not appear in person. His attorney, Shawn Holley, who also represented Lindsay Lohan through her past legal turmoil, attended on his behalf, OTRC.com has learned.

As part of a plea deal, a second DUI count was dismissed. Joe must also pay $1,671 in fines and enroll in a 21-day alcohol education program. His next progress report has been set for May 2013.

Had he been convicted of both charges without such a plea deal, Joe could have been sentenced to 6 months in jail.

Police pulled over Joe on the night of August 4 in Sherman Oaks, California, which is near Los Angeles, and arrested him after suspecting he was drunk.

According to legal documents obtained by OTRC.com, Simpson's blood-alcohol level was above the 0.08 limit and he was "under the combined influence of an alcoholic beverage and a drug." The drug in question is not specified. After he was arrested, Joe spent the night behind bars and was released the following morning.

The DUI marked the first offense for the Simpson family patriarch, who is a former minister who goes by the Twitter handle of Papa Joe.
