Jessica Simpson's baby bikini deemed inappropriate by some

A photo of Jessica Simpson's baby Maxwell Drew in a bikini, which she shared on the inaugural episode of Katie Couric's new daytime talk show "Katie," was deemed inappropriate by some.

The photo shows the 4-month-old daughter wearing a yellow crocheted string bikini. Though most viewers seemed to think it was an adorable shot, some media and child welfare outlets thought otherwise.

Buzzfeed called the photo "embarrassing" and many commenter's on the entertainment site labeled it as being "trashy."

Meanwhile, the British child welfare organization Kidscape accused Simpson of sexualizing her baby and said that as a celebrity, she has a responsibility to lead by example.

"It is to be hoped that parents will understand that 'baby bikinis' are totally inappropriate, and that they contribute to the sexualization and commercialization of childhood," Kidscape director Claude Knights told the UK's Daily Mail. "We should not be compromising the sanctity of our children's early years."

Some viewers also commented on Twitter, calling the baby bikini "just wrong." While others came to the singer's defense, noting that babies often wear bikinis and challenging critics to attack the TLC series "Toddlers in Tiaras" if they want to discuss the sexualization of children.

Simpson has not responded to the baby bikini backlash.

The 32-year-old told Couric that she had lost over 40 pounds, using Weight Watchers, since giving birth to her daughter Maxwell Drew on May 1. Maxwell is the first child for Simpson and her fiance Eric Johnson.

Simpson, who is 5'4", has said in the past that when she posed nude on the April 2012 cover of Elle Magazine she was 170 pounds.

The singer reportedly signed a multi-million dollar deal with the weight loss company to become a spokesperson in June. Her commercial debuted this week and can be seen below. Couric noted that the commercial did not feature a full body shot.

She added that she is gearing up to shoot the next season of her reality s! how "Fash! ion Star" and is about 10 pounds away from her goal weight to wear designer duds for the program.

"I have to shoot a new season of my show 'Fashion Star,' so I want to be in all the pretty dresses and the designer gowns," Simpson said. "I'm 10 pounds away from that."

Simpson also told Couric that she has not set a date for her wedding and that it "won't be this year." She also said she wants to have a big, fun wedding.
