Jessica Simpson says she made her share of fashion don'ts, but likes the hot new colorblocking trend making the rounds in the United States.

Simpson told People magazine she has developed a good instinct for what will be hot and what will not as she builds up her Jessica Simpson line of shoes and apparel, and has become a fan of colorblocking.

Colorblocking, as the name suggests, employs large swaths of single bright colors in an ensemble to be worn along Rodeo Drive or in mid-town Manhattan.

Whether the trend tickles down to mall level remains to be seen, and Simpson admits some trends she latched on to in the past didn't have staying power.

"There are a lot of things I've worn and look back on and think, 'Oh, my,'" Simpson said. "When it comes to beauty, I think a big misconception is the tanner you are, the more beautiful you are. It's not always true. I look back on a lot of pictures where I'm really tan, and I'm like, 'Whoa!"

Tan or not, Simpson's fashion acumen will be put to the test when she takes up a lead role in NBC's upcoming show "Fashion Star."
